HOW TO MAKE HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES – Simple Half Square Triangles

Jul 14, 2020 · 6 Comments

half-square-triangles

So you’re new to quilting and you wonder How Do You Make Half Square Triangles?  I’m here to show you the most outrageously EASY and simple way to cut and sew a half square triangle block.  Half Square Triangles are seriously one of the most versatile blocks to sew and hands down are my favorite.

half-square-triangles

They are simple, look good in nearly any fabric choices, and can be used to make countless combinations.

making-half-square-triangles-tutorial

If you don’t want to think about the math, you can find my Half Square Triangle-based quilt – The Maid Modern Quilt in the shop. It is a minimal modern design that comes in baby and throw sizes.

I have several Half Square Triangle Quilts that are currently in the works (you can see the mini quilt patterns here and here), so I decided to do a simple Half Square Triangles Tutorial so you can make some too! There are several different ways to make half square triangles, each having their own pros and cons, so I am going to be doing a series on them this month covering all the different ways to piece HST’s, some quick HST math cheat sheets, the different patterns that can be made using HST’s, and what type of piecing method is best for what type of project.

First, you might ask, What is a half square triangle?

  • A half square triangle is a basic quilting block.
  • It is when you make a whole square quilt block from two half square triangles.
  • The half square triangles will need to have both sides be the same length and the triangles must be the same size as each other to form a square.
  • Often the name of these blocks will be shortened to HST in the instructions of the pattern.
  • Depending on how the half square triangle is cut, the bias edge (diagonal grain of the fabric) will be either enclosed in the seam or on the outside edges of the square.
  • In this tutorial, the bias seam is enclosed in the diagonal seam, which makes it less likely to distort when handling and pressing it.  This is the preferred beginner method.

Ways to Make Half Square Triangles

This is the first installment of the Half Square Triangle Series.  You can see all of the Half Square Triangle Series below:

  1. Method I – Making Half Square Triangles Tutorial – Simple Half Square Triangles
  2. Method II – HST Tutorial 4 at a Time
  3. Method III – The Magic 8 Method – Make 8 HST at Once
  4. Method IV – Make Half Square Triangles from a Jelly Roll – The Strip Method
  5. Method V – How to Use Half Square Triangle Paper
  6. 25+ Half Square Triangle Quilt Patterns

MAKING HALF SQUARE TRIANGLES TUTORIAL – METHOD I

This is the original tutorial that was made several years ago. The graphics are simple and easy to understand. I have updated the post with new pictures and a video including some great tips for more accurate Half Square Triangles. I am leaving the original here, but you can scroll down to find the photo tutorial and new tips.

how-to-make-half-square-triangles-for-quilting
  1. To make a Half Square Triangles (HST) place two equal-size square Right Sides Together (RST).  Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the top fabric square.
  2. Place the squares RST with the marked square on the top.  Stitch 1/4in on both sides of the marked line.
making-half-square-triangles-tutorial

3. Cut down the marked line to make two new squares.

4. Open the half square triangle blocks outward.

half-square-triangles-tutorial

5.  Press seam (both layers) toward the darker color.

6.  Place a ruler on the block keeping the 45-degree diagonal line over the diagonal seam.  Trim to your square to the desired size.  There will now be two Half Square Triangles (HSTs).

HALF SQUARE TRIANGLE CHART AND FORMULA

easy-half-square-triangle-chart-math-formula

Supplies Needed:

  • Fabric Squares. You can cut them yourself (I have tips for how to cut squares using a Rotary Cutter) or buy 5″ charm squares or a 10″ layer cake to save that step. They usually come in a variety of fabric patterns (usually from a designer’s collection) or can be found in solids, either all in one color in a a color story. Precuts are a great way to just get started sewing, especially if you are new to quilting.
  • Frixon Erasable Pen – this pen erases with heat, so when you press open the quilt block it will disappear.
  • Clear Plastic Quilt Ruler. I prefer a square one to make half square triangles or any square quilt block. The square feature and markings make it much easier to align and square up the quilt block. My go to ruler is from Creative Grids. They are a little pricier than other brands but the way the ruler is designed has made it far easier to use and is definitely my favorite. Going forward I will only buy rulers made by them.
  • Pins or Wonder clips. Wonder clips are quite a bit quicker to take on and off.
  • Rotary Cutter and Mat. My favorite rotary cutter is the Fiskars Designer Series, they are super cute and easy to use.
  • Quilting Sewing Machine Needle – I use a 90/14 when Quilting Needle from Schmetz when piecing with quilting cottons. You can find the Ultimate Guide to Sewing Machine Needles for Quilters with a free downloadable PDF.

This tutorial is essentially the same as the graphic one above but completed in photo steps for those who prefer this method.

How to Choose the Right Sewing Machine Needle for Quilting

Jun 25, 2020 · 5 Comments

What’s the deal with sewing machine needles for quilting? Universal Needles, Quilting Needles, Microtex Sharp Needles, Topstitching Needles…. there so many different types. How do you know which one the right type for your quilting project? I’m going to break down today the differences between the different types of sewing machine needles and which one is the right one for you.

Today we are going to discussing the Schmetz brand of sewing machine needles, as I believe they are the best needles on the market and use them exclusively.

There are a couple of definitions that you need to know about to know before we get started.

Point Style – This refers to how the point of the needle is shaped and generally defines what type of needle it is.

Sizes – This refers to what size the needle comes in and defines what type or thickness of fabric it should be used with as well as the weight of thread being used.

Color Code – This is the color that you will find on the shaft of the needle to tell you what type of needle it is when not in the packaging.

Piecing – This is where you sew fabric pieces together to make the quilt top.

Quilting – Stitching (sometimes decorative) through the three layers of quilt, top, batting, and backing to hold them all in place.

Types of Sewing Machine Needles for Quilting

Universal Needle –

  • As the name suggests this is a multi-purpose needle that is good for a variety of projects however this is not the one to handle lots of layers.
  • The point style is slightly rounded and does not have a color code.
  • It comes in quite a few sizes with the most commonly used being sizes 75/11, 80/12, 90/14.

Quilting Needle –

  • This needle has a thin shaft and is designed for both piecing and machine quilting through the quilt sandwich (top, batting, binding).
  • The point style is slightly rounded with a tapered shaft that pierces through several layers of woven fabric at one time without damaging them.
  • It comes in sizes 75/11, 80/12, 90/14, and has a green color code stripe on the needle to identify it.

Topstitching Needle –

  • This needle has a long eye and a deep groove down the shaft that is designed to accommodate heavier threads or fabrics being used.
  • The point style is quite sharp and pointed.
  • It comes in sizes 80/12, 90/14, 100/16, and does not have a color code. The larger sizes will make bigger holes in the fabric, so be sure to use the right size thread with these needles.

Microtex Sharp Needle –

  • This needle has a thin shaft and sharp point that is used for fine wovens such as poplin cotton, voile, and lawn.
  • The point style is quite sharp and pointed and produces very nice stitches that are perfect for piecing.
  • It comes in sizes 60/8, 65/9, 70/10, 80/12, 90/14, and has a purple color code stripe. The thinner needle is more apt to break and should be changed more often. If the needle breaks often it is recommended to increase the needle size.

MODERN QUILT PATTERN FOR BEGINNERS – AND A GIRLS BEDROOM REVEAL

Apr 29, 2020 · 3 Comments

modern-quilt-pattern-for-beginners

Ready, set, quilt with the perfect Modern Quilt Pattern for Beginners!

The Inspiration for the Modern Quilt Pattern

You guys I am beyond excited to this week’s modern girls’ bedroom reveal Highlighted by the Free Modern Scrappy Version of my Swiss Cross Quilt Pattern! The inspiration for her room came from the statement black and white plus quilt and it turned out magical. It was over a year ago that I started designing a modern girl’s black and white bedroom. I had all the pieces put together except for the quilt, which was sitting half made in my work in progress pile.

free-modern-quilt-pattern

I had slowly been chugging along on it. Taking it out every so often to make a little more progress. Did I mention that there were two quilts in the works? One for the top and bottom bunk of course. The blocks were all made and the had even started making their ways into rows, but it still seemed an eternity unit I was finally going to get them finished. Between the kid’s school, my work, and always being on the go there was little time to actually sit down and sew. Confession: I am still working on the second quilt.

modern-quilt-pattern-for-beginners

Until March hit. Suddenly I had more time, then I knew what to do with. So I dug out my WIP box and decided that I was going to wittle my way through the box during this stay at home period.

black-and-white-quilt-pattern-for-beginners

So far I have finished two quilts from the pile and updated a few of the patterns on the website and will be offering them in a downloadable format. I will be sharing those in the next few weeks, along with some new patterns.

black-and-white-quilt-pattern

Back to the super cool kids quilt. Actually I made this quilt a bit more mature on purpose. I wanted to create a quilt that was modern and sophisticated enough for her to take to college with her. Anything that she was going to love now because it was covered in pinks and purples and adorned with unicorns was not something that she would think was cool when she is seventeen.

free-beginner-quilt-pattern

I also wanted her bedroom to grow with her. I wanted it to have a few pieces that could be changed out as her taste matures but that would still be something that looked appropriate for an adolescent.

easy-beginner-quilt-pattern

I’m sure you are ready to get to all the deets on the quilt and room.

modern-baby-quilt-pattern

The quilt is a scrappy twin size version of my Modern Swiss Cross Quilt Pattern.

Or head to the Resource Library to download the pattern now.

The modern quilt pattern for beginners really is made to be easy to sew and assemble with its large blocks and simple square and rectangle pieces. The pattern comes in a crib, throw, and twin so you can make it for several different sizes. I also designed the pattern so it would be just as easy to make it using one fabric for the plus blocks as it would be to make a scrappy modern quilt.

You might also notice that some of the fabrics don’t line up exactly. Let me tell you, I didn’t fuss or worry about it one bit. I was using scraps and fat quarters, some of which were not on grain, and some of which I had only small amounts. Perfection is overrated and I figured it added to some of its scrappy charm. So don’t let the quilt police scare you off from making your next imperfect scrappy quilt!

Isn’t that backing fabric just adorble???

The Modern Quilt Pattern For Beginners Details

Here are some of the fabrics I used to make the free modern scrap quilt pattern. Some of the fabrics are sold out so I didn’t list them here.

  • Kona Cotton White
  • Kona Cotton Black
  • Small Carolina Gingham Check
  • Essex Woven Grid in Black
  • Boxed in Black
  • Carolina Gingham Black 1″
  • Carolina Gingham Black 2″
  • Horseshoes Lucky Charms – Black with Silver Metallic
  • Zip Black
  • Freckles in Licorice
  • Backing – Meadow Dreams Lace from Bonnie Christine

Here are also a few other black and white fabrics that would work well.

  • X Marks the Spot
  • Tulips in Noir
  • Mountains
  • Mariner Cloth Black
  • Classic Plaid in Black
  • Running Stitch Charcoal
  • Flying Ribbon in Black
  • Triangle Stripe Black
  • Tape Measure Black
  • Backing – Pink Fabrics from Bonnie Christine

The Girl’s Modern Bedroom Reveal

If you’re interested in how her room turned out, keep on reading! If not go get your copy of the Modern Swiss Cross Quilt Pattern.

I was totally crushing on this modern bed frame with its white round corners contrasting with the pinewood posts. I found the twin bed frame on Amazon. It’s called the Birdie Bunk Bed made by Novogratz.

modern-girls-bedroom-ideas

The pink faux fur throw pillows were a fun detail that is perfect for any little girl’s room. And pairs perfectly with modern black and white aesthetic. It’s also something that can be easily replaced as she grows older and doesn’t love pink as much anymore.

The faux fur area rug is soft and a great place to sit on the ground and play with the pets. I really might need one for my room as well.

I found the side table randomly at Ross one day. I love the brass and rustic wooden top. I searched for a few options that I thought would also work well in this room. I found an affordable and cute marble top side table on Amazon. I also really like this drum-style side table. It has a fun geometric base that adds a lot of visual interest. If you want to splurge this sleek modern side table with hairpin legs is a great option.

The nightstand is decorated with a stone pot faux succulent and this adorable unicorn night lite.

As you can see I am still working on finishing the second quilt, but I loved how the room looked with the first one done that I had to take photos of it and do a blog post. I also plan to replace the pink and mint felt ball garland with this more classic color felt ball garland.

I balanced the hard lines of the modern furniture with the soft texture of faux fur. And because there is a lot of hardness in the room I thought the more faux fur the better! So I added the Ivory faux fur butterfly chair which is such a great chair for a kids room. It is the perfect place to cuddle up and read a book and can easily be folded up and moved if she needs more room. They are sold out of the exact one I ordered but I really like the metal legs on this butterfly chair as well.

I saw these grey window sheers with pom pom trim on them and knew they had to be in her room. They are one of my favorite things in there.

The mid-century modern dresser was a Wayfair find that looks like it was married to her bed frame, with the rounded corners and contrasting white and wood trim. I could no longer find the exact one I bought but this two tone dresser is pretty close.

I am obsessed with the modern lamp in her room. The geometric base looks right at home in her room. I found the potted grass plant at Ross as well.

The Yarn Wall Art was a project that I made just for her room. I ordered these floral hoops and used some black, white, and grey yarns to make it. It was super simple to make and adds some visual texture to the wall. I will be posting a video tutorial for this one soon!

The dog was pretty quick to notice that the quilt had quite resemblance to him and was quick to claim it as his.

They made pretty cute pair of quilt models.

Step 10. Using 1/2″ seam, sew around the perimeter of the pillow being sure to leave an opening wide enough to insert stuffing. Alternatively, you can sew a zipper on the backside by adding 1″ to the length of the pillow back and following this tutorial.

Sewing With Flannel: Tips You Need to Know

Jan 8, 2020 · 24 Comments

sewing-with-flannel

Flannel has to be on the list of almost everyone’s favorite fabrics. It is soft and fuzzy and makes you think of cuddling up by the fireplace in pj’s. It is readily available at nearly any fabric shop and overall is a great, low-cost affordable fabric to sew with. It also has a few wacky properties to it when it comes to sewing. So hang on if you are ready to give sewing with flannel a go, and check out these MUST HAVE TIPS FOR SEWING WITH FLANNEL FABRIC.

diy-flannel-infinity-scarf

The Lowdown on Flannel

How is Flannel Made? Flannel can be made from wool, cotton or other synthetic fibers. Generally, most sewing takes place with cotton flannel. Why is it so yummy, soft and scrumptious? When being manufactured a fine metal brush is used to raise some of the fibers creating the “nap” or the wonderfully soft fuzzy feeling of the fabric that makes you want to rub it up and down on your cheek.

Flannel Quality. Did you know that the quality of flannel you are sewing with can make a big difference? Say what? Generally, the more expensive the flannel, the higher thread count. Often it is double-sided and will last longer and pill less. It also tends to fray less and shrinks less. I am a big fan of the Flannels made by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. I have found them to be nice and thick, they hold up well, have minimal pilling and are nicer to work with since the weave is a little tighter. Lower quality flannels have a lower thread count which means they will stretch and distort far easier. They also do not tend to hold up to wear very well.

Is Flannel Hard to Sew? Well….I guess it depends on how well you prepare for it. If you follow all of the tips below it should be a breeze. But if you just jump in thinking its no different than regular quilting cotton, you are likely to come out looking like you just took a polar bear plunge. No, I kid. It’s really not that bad. It may make you say a few bad words, but once you learn how to work with it, you will be able to handle it like a pro.

Tips Preparing Flannel Fabric For Sewing

Buy More. Flannel has a loose weave and will shrink quite a bit. You can ensure that you have enough for your project by purchasing more than the project calls for. Generally, a quarter to half is enough.

Ready for the number one question when sewing with flannel? Here it is! It is also my number one tip.

Should You Wash Flannel Before Sewing?

Yes! Flannel is notorious for shrinking and it is necessary to prewash flannel fabric before sewing. Flannel is often sewn together with fabrics that are polyesters, such as minky or fleece and do not shrink. Sewing unwashed flannel with result in bunching and puckered seams.

How to Prewash Flannel:

Washing: I prefer to wash flannel with hot water. This will help to shrink it down before it heads into the dryer. It will fray quite a bit in the washing machine, but you can help prevent excess fraying by using a lingerie bag. Another tip is to make small diagonal cuts into the corners of the fabric so there are less matted and pulled threads on the edges when you remove it from the washing machine.

Drying: Dry Flannel Fabric on the highest heat setting to ensure maximum shrinkage. This will also help remove excess lint and fuzz before you start sewing it. You can also add a towel or tennis ball to the dryer to prevent twisting and tangling.

Ironing. Pressing your Flannel Fabric is perhaps one of the most important steps when it comes to your flannel sewing project being successful. Spray starch on the wrong side of the fabric and use a medium heat setting on your iron. Use the steam setting to help reduce wrinkles. MOST IMPORTANTLY – DO NOT use pressure when pressing the fabric. This will distort and stretch the fabric. Instead of sliding the iron across the fabric, lift the iron and set down lightly to press.

Cutting Flannel Fabric:

Cutting. Starching the flannel will make it easier to line up the fabric without it pulling and shifting. You may find the easiest way to get a straight flannel cut is to fold the fabric Right Sides Together so that the nap holds the fabric in place and to line up the lengthwise grain (the threads going up and down vertically). This can also be achieved by lining the selvage up straight.

How Do You Straighten Flannel Fabric? This is one of the tricky things about sewing with flannel, especially since many flannel prints are plaids which can look wonky when not cut straight. My number one tip starch. But besides that, it depends on how the flannel was made. A higher-quality flannel is usually made with the fibers or plaid being woven together, so the simple way is to line up the grain vertically (the vertical threads in the fabric). Some flannels are printed on instead and are sometimes printed a bit crooked. In that case, your best bet is to line up the pattern straight on your cutting mat as best as you can. This may make the actual grain of the fabric skewed, but the only way you can make the print look straight.

Will Pinking Shears Stop Flannel From Fraying? Yes and no. Pinking Shears will help stop flannel from fraying in the immediate future, such as while you are sewing it, but it will not permanently prevent it from fraying and is not a good solution unless that is the look you are trying to achieve, such a flannel rag quilt.

How Do You Prevent Flannel From Fraying? The best and most secure solution for preventing the flannel fabric from fraying is to serge or overlock your seams. If you do not have a serger or overlock machine, you can use a zig-zag stitch on the fabric edge. This is ideal for garments made from flannel. If you are looking for a shorter-term solution to prevent fraying while sewing, fray check or pinking shears would do the trick.

flannel-sherpa-fleece-baby-blanket-diy
Flannel and Sherpa Blanke Tutorial Shown

Sewing With Flannel Fabric

Seam Allowance. It is helpful to use a 1/2″ seam allowance when sewing projects that will be pulled on or stressed such as stuffies and baby toys. Also when sewing quilts, blankets, and larger projects, especially if it is a lighter weight flannel that may be more likely to stretch. If using a quilt pattern that calls for 1/4″ seams you will need to 1/2″ to all block measurements to accommodate the 1/2″ seam allowance.

Flannel Sheds. What does that mean? Well since it has a loose weave lots of lint tends to accumulate on your needle and way down in your sewing machine. It is helpful to clean out your bobbin, the bobbin case, and around the needle after sewing with flannel. If you’ve really been getting down and dirty with it, then you may need to clean it out several times during your project.

flannel-sew

Quilting with Cotton and Flannel

  • Using a Poly-blend batting will help prevent bunching and shifting.
  • If using flannel precuts do not prewash since they will fray.
  • Press seams open to reduce bulk since flannel is a thicker fabric.
  • If binding with flannel, be sure to add a half-inch to your binding width as well as increasing your finished binding seam.
  • Use a walking foot when quilting to help prevent it from stretching. Quilting gloves can also be helpful.

Can You Sew Cotton and Flannel Together? Yes, you can! But I highly recommend preparing your fabrics according to the flannel fabric preparation tips above. If piecing flannel and cotton fabrics together using a 1/4″ seam allowance is suitable. It is still recommended to handle these blocks with care.

Tension for Sewing With Flannel. Loosen your tension a bit and sew with a 3.0mm stitch length as a shorter stitch length will stretch the flannel.

Use Caution When Ripping Out Seams. Since flannel has a looser weave than most kinds of cotton fabric it is much easier to stretch and pull on the fabric when ripping out seams. It is also a more delicate fabric and you will find it easy to make an accidental hole while using the seam ripper.

Can You Use Flannel as Batting? Absolutely! It is often the batting of choice when sewing rag quilts as it frays easily and makes that nice and soft rag edge. You can also use it as batting in a quilt. Be sure to prewash it. And because it is a woven fabric you will not need to quilt as closely together since there is no batting to shift around.

flannel-fabric-tips

Helpful Notions for Sewing Flannel Fabric:

  • Starch. Starch is your best friend when it comes to preventing the fabric from stretching and flannel is notorious for stretching and distorting. Spray starch on the wrong side of the fabric or nap and iron on a low setting to remove wrinkles after prewashing. This will also help prevent stretching when sewing and handling the flannel fabric.
  • All-Purpose Thread. After prewashing and shrinking your flannel fabric, using all-purpose thread, which is made of polyester and does not shrink will help flannel retain its sewn shape.
  • Size 16 Sewing Needle. This large size needle will pierce flannels thicker threads easier. Flannel will dull a needle quicker than many other fabrics, so be sure to change your needle often.
  • A Walking Foot. Since Flannel tends to stretch and distort easier than many fabrics, using a walking foot will help to prevent this and feed the fabric evenly when sewing.
  • Fray Check. This is especially handy when sewing small pieces of flannel, and will prevent the edges from fraying when sewing and handling.
  • Smooth Edge Tracing Wheel and Wax Free Tracing Paper. When transferring markings be sure to use a smooth edge tracing wheel to prevent the fabric from stretching.
