Apron Onesie Tutorial

Ruffle Apron Onesie Tutorial

The APRON ONESIE was inspired by my amazing friend who photographs the most beautiful baby pictures.  I thought that this might be a fun prop for a baby photo shoot or for momma’s that love to cook.

apron onesie patternFor the fabric, I used Tasha Noel’s Little Red Riding Hood.  I love how playful it is and the bright colors.  The onesie made above was a size 3 months.  The template can be easily adjusted for larger sizes by adding 1/4″ around the template for each size bigger.

This project is perfect for scraps and precuts,

What you will need:

Cut 2 of Apron Front and Back pieces

Waist Band:  2.5″ x 43″ strip

Top Ruffle: 2.5″ x 9″ strip

Bottom Ruffle:  2.5″ x 24″ strip

Neck Strap: (2) 2″ x 4″ strips  (not pictured above)ruffle apron onesieFold the ruffle strip Right Sides Together and stitch the ends closed.  Turn Wrong Sides Together and gather raw edge.  Align raw edges of ruffle to apron top with the fold facing toward the middle.  Pull the ends of the ruffles slightly upward so it tapers of the apron piece.  Sandwich the ruffles between both apron pieces RST and using a 1/2″ seam sew a “U” shape around the left, top, and right sides leaving the bottom piece open.  Turn right side out and top stitch (optional).  Repeat for the bottom piece except extend the ruffle all the way around.  Clip corners.

With apron front sides facing each other, align raw edges and sew 1/2″ seam.  Open up and press seam toward the bottom piece.

apron oneste tutorialFold the waistband strip in half and using a 1/4″ seam sew one short side and down the long side.  Turn right side out and press.  Turn the open end under 1/4″ and sew closed.

For the neck straps, I only sew the outer edge. placing it along the shoulder seam so I left room for the onesie to fit over babies head 🙂 I also only sew the top and bottom sides of the apron top so the knit fabric would still be able to stretch with the baby since I was using a woven fabric for the apron.

I sewed a rectangular shape along the waistband, starting and stopping at the ruffle edges.

Ruffle Baby Blanket Tutorial DIY your own Boutique Blanket

DIY Boutique Ruffle Baby Blanket Tutorial to make a beautiful blanket just like you see in the stores!

Over the years I have made tons of minky blankets and when I first started sewing with minky it made me want to scream.  But I have some easy tips to make sewing with minky a breeze!

What you’ll need:

1 yard cotton or flannel fabric

1 yard Minky fabric

1 package Wrights Blanket Binding

1 package Dritz Wash Away Wonder Tape (Optional)

Tools Needed:

Cutting Mat

See through grid ruler

Rotary Cutter

Walking Foot

Ruffler Foot *(Can be done without)

Ruffle Baby Blanket Tutorial Steps:

how to use a ruffling foot sewing
CIMG6095

I like to start by ruffling my Blanket Binding first.  The easiest way is to use a Ruffler Foot Attachment and simply feed the binding through.  I set mine on the largest setting where it makes the deepest tucks every 12 stitches.  I also set my stitch length to 4.  If you don’t have a Ruffler Foot that is ok, you can simply do the ruffles by hand and pin all the tucks.

CIMG6079

To start off cut the yard of Minky in half so it is approximately 29-30 inches wide and 36 inches long. Then I lay my yard of cotton or flannel fabric folded in half lengthwise with the selvage on top and the fold lined up on the bottom line of the cutting mat.  Taking my see through ruler I cut the top of the blanket at 32 inches on the cutting mat and then cut the bottom of the blanket at the 0 mark, making the blanket 32 inches tall. Then fold the fabric in the opposite direction – so part that was just cut is now lining up together.  Then lay the fabric back down on the cutting mat with the fold lined up on the bottom line and the just cut sides on top.  Then cut so the blanket is 28 1/2 inches wide.

In the next step I take any round edge object and line it up on the corners (while still folded in half) and cut a round corner with my rotary blade.

CIMG6094

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Dritz Wash Away Wonder Tape – it makes working with Minky so much easier!

CIMG6108
CIMG6104

Then using my Dritz Wash Away Wonder Tape instead of pins because it is so much faster and helps with less slippage, I lay it around the border of the cotton or flannel fabric and one piece down the center. After Laying it down I peel off the top non stick coating on the tape and simply press the Ruffle Blanket Binding onto it going around the whole blanket.

I leave the edges open without any stitching and not pressed onto the fabric so I can sew the binding togetherTurning the satin binding edges so the shiny side faces each other I pin and sew 1/4 inch seam

When I press the finished binding back down on the fabric I like to hide the seam in a *Ruffle Fold*.then I simply pin in place to hold.

CIMG6120

Using the Wonder Tape again I once again go around the border of the blanket on top the Ruffle Edge (about 1/4 inch from the fabric edge) and peel of the top non stick layer when done.

Almost there!  Taking the minky fabric I lay it down face up and take the cotton panel with the ruffles and lay it face down on the minky and press down firmly along the borders where the wonder tape is to make sure it sticks firmly.

Then I pin about 6 inches apart on the bottom of the blanket to mark where I start and stop – so I can leave an opening to turn the blanket right side out when I’m done sewing the seam.

CIMG6121
CIMG6113

Using my WALKING FOOT (very import to use this, otherwise the fabric will slip)  I stitch 1/4 inch seam.  I start at the bottom pin and sew until I get all the way around the blanket to the top pin, so as to leave about a 6 inch opening.

CIMG6124 (1)Using my Grid Ruler I line it up with the edge and cut off all the excess minky.  Except at the 6 inch opening where I leave an extra half inch.

CIMG6124
CIMG6126 (1)
CIMG6129

I like to check the edges to make sure that all of the satin binding has been stitched into the seam.  If you find that you have missed some grab the seam ripper and restitch:)

Turn the blanket right side out using the 6 inch unstitched space and tuck the unstitched edge under and pin.

Finally, topstitch about 1/8 from the edge and your done!  (Don’t forget to throw it in the wash to remove the Wonder Tape)  You now have a beautiful boutique style Ruffle Baby Blanket.  Enjoy!

A Valentines Geranium Dress

valentines-day-geranium-dress

For Valentines Day I finished up some Geranium Dresses that I started over the holidays.  I was a bit on a Geranium dress binge (you can see them here and here) at the time and hadn’t quite gotten them done in time for Christmas.  Perfect opportunity to whittle down on my Work-in-Progress stack!  I added some red ribbon and pearl buttons and…Valentines Day dress!little-girl-smiling-deranium-dress The best part for her was the red American girl doll umbrella I found on amazon.  she loved twirling around with it! red-umbrella-little-girl-twirling I love the softness added by the pearl buttons I found at Joann Fabric.  back-of-geranium-dressI am in love with the naptime hair little red strip on the button placket that really contrasts with the black and white fabric.  Ok, but the hair!  I totally did not even notice until I saw these photos.  Mama exhaustion much?red-stripe-button-placket-with-pear-buttonsThe black and white fabric is out of stock now but was from the Mystic line by Lila Tuellar.  red-and-black-geranium-dressFor the skirt I used a white taffeta from amazon and a lace rose trim I got from there as well.little-girl-with-red-umbrellaI had to include this sweet picture of her sucking her thumb.  She had just woken up from her nap and was still kind of sleepy.  It’s tough being three!  wink.valentines-day-geranium-dressI think this one might be my favorite picture.  McKenna decided zebra shoes were the perfect accessory! valentines-day-dress-sewing-patternIt’s a good thing it wasn’t actually raining outside, I’m not sure this umbrella would have helped!lila-tuellar-fabric-geranium-dress

I usually go for bright colors like pink and aqua, but the red and black are just so classic!

Minky Toddler Pillowcase Tutorial

With this easy peasy DIY Minky Toddler Pillowcase Tutorial, you can make your own super easy and adorable boutique style minky toddler pillowcase.

We all love little tots and its a huge step going from a crib to a big toddler bed.  But their little heads aren’t quite ready for a full size pillow and its hard to find toddler pillows, especially to match your bedding!  So why not make your own DIY Minky Toddler Pillowcase!

Need:

1/2 Yard of Cotton

1/4 Yard of Dimple Dot Minky

12″ x 16″ Pillow Form (my favorite brand here)

Finished Toddler Pillow Size 12″ x 16″

***If sewing a pillowcase with Flannel you may also find These MUST HAVE TIPS FOR SEWING WITH FLANNEL FABRIC helpful.

Toddler Pillowcase Tutorial

  • Cut Minky strip 33″ x 8.5″
  • Cut rectangle 13.5 ” x 33″

Using your rotary blade or scissors cut 2 rectangles 13.5″ tall by 33″ wide

Then pin the top edges together and sew 1/4″ seam to make a piece that is now 33″ tall by 13″ wide.

Next take your 8.5″ strip of minky and fold in half.

Place the folded minky strip on the right edge of the vertical rectangle with the edges all of the minky and the cotton lined up and pin every 1/2″ – 1″ apart.

Next sew a zig zag seam along the pinned minky and cotton edges making sure to sew with the minky on the bottom.  A walking foot is helpful, but not necessary for this short project.  Since minky is a stretchy fabric, sewing with it on the bottom will allow the feed dogs on the machine to feed it faster than the top cotton layer.  A zig zag seam will also help keep the minky from getting a bit wonky with its cotton counter part and reduce the bulk.

If you’ve followed me this far you will then have a long minky edged rectangle!

Fold the rectangle in half with the wrong side of the fabric facing each other and pin the side and bottom edges. Be sure to pin generously to keep the minky in place.  I like to pin every 1/2″ to 1″ since minky likes to slide.
If using a serger you can find some tips here. And more tips on working with minky here.

Turn right side out and TA DA!  You have some adorable boutique pillow cases!!!
If you haven’t sewn with minky before, I have some great tips here.

Valentines Day T-shirt Tutorial – DIY Patchwork Heart Applique

Sep 24, 2014 ·

DIY-Valentines-Day-Patchwork-Heart-Applique
DIY-Valentines-Day-T-shirt-Heart-Applique

Just in time for Valentines Day, I have a Valentines Day T-shirt Tutorial for you,  I made these adorable T-Shirts for my two little girls with this years cutest Valentines Day fabric called Sweetcakes from Riley Blake Designs.  This cute line of fabric has colorful hearts, cakes, flowers, and stripes.  These T-Shirts were super easy to make and used just 1 charm pack of fabric.  I made two different styles, and have included the heart template for both of these here.

You will need:

Patchwork Heart Tutorial Template

1 Charm Pack
1 T-Shirt
Steam-a-Seam or other fusible for applique
Rotary Cutter
Cutting Mat

For the first one I created a patchwork pattern by using 6 5″ squares that I cut into 2 1/2″ squares with my rotary cutter.

I then patch-worked together my squares so the finished square is 8″ x 8″ and uses 16 2 1/2″ squares.  Either iron or finger press down all the seam.  Then clip all the seam allowance as close to the stitching as you can so the seams will interfere less with the Steam-a-Seam.

Valentines Day T-shirt Tutorial – DIY Patchwork Heart Applique

DIY-Valentines-Day-Patchwork-Heart-Applique

Cut a piece of Steam-a-Seam the approximate size of your patchwork piece.  Following the directions peel one side of the fusible and place onto the back of the patchwork square  I made sure to pre-launder the white T-Shirts to help my steam-a-seam stick better. Using my large heart template, I scotch taped it to the front of the waxy side of my steam-a-seam.

Then cut it out and Ta Da, you have a patchwork heart.  Then simply iron on to your t-shirt.

DIY-Valentines-Day-Patchwork-Heart-Applique-Small-Hearts
To stitch the applique I like to use copy paper on the underneath side of the t-shirt as a stabilizer.  Its easy to get and inexpensive.  I set my machine to wide zigzag stitch with a short stitch length and just follow the outline of the heart.  I am absolutely not an expert when it comes to applique, in fact it usually seems to cause me the most grief of all my sewing endeavors, but I love how cute all the projects come out (don’t look too closely, you might notice some mistakes, lol)
For the smaller hearts, I used my smaller heart template
  and 3 charm squares.
