Easy Sew Christmas Ornaments!  I needed some DIY kid friendly Christmas ornaments. no breaking, no shattering, no small pieces.  So…I went with the perennial favorite: stuffed fabric Christmas ornaments.

If you would like to learn to make some easy sew Christmas ornaments than you will love this tutorial.  These DIY kid friendly Christmas ornaments are super quick to sew and make a great gift as well.easy-sew-christmas-ornaments

I used Nutcracker fabric and Christmas Tree fabric made by Michael Miller.  I cut out the shapes I liked the best, sewed the edges, stuffed with batting and closed them up. stuffed-christmas-tree-ornametn-tutorial I used a little embroidery floss to hang them with.  Super simple and fast.  Plus they add lots of bright colors and shapes without having to worry whether the kids are going to break them. fabric-christmas-ornament-tutorial My girls current favorite Christmas Tree activity is taking all the ornaments off the lower part of the tree and wrapping them up for presents to give to each other so these fit the bill nicely ;), and I get to see some of my favorite Christmas fabrics for years to come.

how-to-make-a-pom-pom-pillow

Is there anything cuter than Pom Pom Pillows?!  You can learn how to make a Pom Pom Pillow with this easy tutorial including a video!  The video breaks down all the steps you need for the Pom Pom Pillow Tutorial.  It is so easy you will want to make tons of them!
how-to-make-a-pom-pom-pillow-coverPom poms are super trendy right now and seriously they look cute on just about everything from Jumbo Quilted Pillows to pom pom napkins, and even tiny pom pom coasters.  After learning how to make a pom pillow you will be ready to add them to everything around you!  My friend Kim made the most awesome pom pom blouse!pom-pom-pillow-cover-tutorial On a side note, how gorgeous is this fabric?!  The florals are simply stunning!  You will want to sew all the things with this fabric line from the Polka Dot Chair.pom-pom-pillow-tutorial

Pom Pom Pillow Tutorial Supplies:

  1. 1 Yard of fabric (Derby Day Floral Fabric is shown here)
  2. (1) 18″ pillow insert
  3. 2 yards of pom pom trim
  4. (1) 18″ zipper

How to Make a Pom Pom Pillow:

    1. Cut fabric for front and back pillow pieces.  You will need a 19″ x 19″ square for the front and a 6.5″ x 19″ and 13.5″ x 19″ pieces for the back.  You will be making a zipper in this pillow.  If you prefer not to make a zipper simply cut 2 19″ x 19″ pillow squares.fold-pillow-backs-pieces-together-to-make-zipper
    2. Starting with the back piece, lay the smaller rectangle over the larger rectangle right sides together (RST). clip-fabric-pieces-together

  1. Clip down the right side edge.
  2. Sew a 1/2″ seam using a long basting stitch.  You do not need to backstitch because you will be removing this seam later on.  If you have the Viking Husqvarna Sapphire 965Q simply select the basting stitch on the screen and the fabric type.iron-zipper-panel-flat
  3. Press seam open.baste-zipper-into-place-with-glue
  4. Use glue or another method to secure zipper (this wonder tape zipper hack is another easy way to sew a zipper). how-to-sew-a-zippre-into-a-pillow
  5. After placing glue on the seam, line the zipper up on the center of the seam and iron in place to secure glue.  You can also safety pin the top of the zipper so it does not wiggle while sewing.sew-a-zipper-into-a-pillow
  6. Using your zipper foot, sew zipper into place.  Remove a few of the basting stitches before sewing so you can unzip the zipper later.
  7. Remove all the basting stitches with your seam ripper.how-to-sew-pom-poms-on-a-pillow
  8. With front pillow square clip the pom pom trim along the edge of the pillow and sew using a 3/8″ seam. add-pom-pom-trim-to-edges-of-pillow-front
  9. Do not pull pom pom trim as you sew or it will scrunch the pillow.  Gently feed it as you sew.  Clip the end of pom pom trim when you reach the last corner.place-pillow-back-over-pillow-front-right-sides-together-and-pin
  10. Place the pillow front facing right side up and then place the pillow back on top so that the fabric pieces are right sides together.  Unzip a few inches so you will be able to turn the pillow right side out when finished.
  11. Sew around the perimeter of the pillow using a 1/2″ seam.  Backstitch when finishes to secure seams.  Clip corners to remove excess fabric bulk.how-to-sew-a-pom-pom-pillow
  12. Turn pom pom pillowcase right side out.pom-pom-pillow-tutorial
  13. Insert pillow form and you are done, you have learned how to make a pom pom pillow!

How to Make a Fitted Crib Sheet Tutorial – Soft Minky Crib Sheet Tutorial – for babies and toddlers

Jun 26, 2018 ·

fitted-minky-crib-sheet-tutorial
how-to-mkae-a-fitted-crib-sheet

Everybody loves Minky, especially in the winter to keep nice and warm!  I will show you How to Make a Fitted Crib Sheet Tutorial.  This  Minky Crib Sheet Tutorial is perfect for both babies and toddlers.  You might also want to check out the Best Tips for Sewing Minky Fabric and How to Make a Toddler Pillowcase Tutorial.

This fitted crib sheet tutorial is for a standard crib or toddler bed mattress, but if you are using minky fabric it is wide enough to use for a twin bed sheet.  Oh, happy kids!

fitted-crib-sheet-tutorial

What is the size of a standard crib mattress?

What is the size of a twin bed sheet?

A standard size twin bed sheets 39″ x 80″

minky-crib-sheet-tutorial

Fitted Crib Sheet Tutorial Supplies Needed:

  • 2 Yards Cuddle Minky, Dimple Dot Minky, Woven Cotton or Knit Fabric
  • 102″ of 1/4″ elastic
  • 1 Rotary Blade
  • 1 Clear Grid Ruler
  • 1 Cutting Mat
  • ***Walking foot if using minky or knit fabric.

steps how to make a crib sheetHow to Make a Fitted Crib Sheet Tutorial – Soft Minky Crib Sheet Tutorial

Cut Minky or cotton fabric to make a 67″ x 44″ rectangle.

Steps 1 and 2.  Using your rotary blade and mat line up the corner of your rectangle and cut an 8″ from both the top and side of the fabric to form an 8″ square.  Repeat on remaining 3 sides.

3.  You can also place the fabric wrong sides together and cut through 2 layers at once.

4.  Fold the two edges of the square together, so right sides are facing each other and pin.

5.  Sew with a long straight stitch from the top of the corner section to the bottom.  Repeat for all 4 corners.   *You can zig-zag stitch the edges if you prefer, but since minky does not ravel it is not required.  However, if you are using a woven cotton, I would highly recommend doing so.

You should now have something resembling a crib sheet.  You are almost finished, just the sides to complete!

6 & 7.  Starting with any side you prefer to roll or press the unfinished bottom of the sheet under 1/4″ (IF USING MINKY FABRIC DO NOT IRON), then roll or iron this part under 1″ and pin every 1 to 1 1/2″.

**I do these steps together as I go around the blanket since it tends to unroll and ironing is not possible with minky.

8.  Sew 1.25″ from the edge of the fabric around the entire sheet to form the casing.  Leave a 2″-3″ opening to insert the elastic. For woven cotton fabric sew using a straight stitch.  For Minky or Knit fabric use a long zig-zag stitch (which helps the minky and knit fabric top side from pulling and slipping like a straight stitch will do).

9.  Insert the elastic into the casing and pull through (I like to use a safety pin to help pull it through the casing) and guide all the way around to the open slit.  To close, pin the ends of the elastic together overlapping an inch and sew.  Then roll the open fabric under to form the rest of the casing and sew closed.

*** Tips for Minky Crib Sheet Tutorial:  I prefer to sew minky fabric with a zig zag stitch since it helps to keep both layers from slipping and pulling and works really well absorbing its plushness.

You now have a soft and snuggly fitted crib sheet for a lovely baby or toddler!toddler-crib-sheet-tutorial

Sewing Hack: How to Sew a Zipper with Wonder Tape

Jun 21, 2018 · 1 Comment

zipper-sewing-hack

Zippers can be totally intimidating to beginners.  They will and move and never come out as perfect as the ones you see in the store.  I have a sewing hack that is going to be your go-to method from now on when sewing zippers.  I will show you exactly how to sew a zipper with wonder tape for a perfect zipper installation.how-to-sew-a-lap-zipper-tutorial-with-wonder-tape

Try using this zipper sewing hack with the Modern Hourglass Quilted Pillow.

Wonder Tape Zipper Supplies

  1. 1-yard fabric  *Fabric shown is Jockey Silks Blue from Melissa Mortenson
  2. 18″ pillow form
  3. 18″ ykk zipper
  4. Washaway Wonder Tape
  5. Zipper Foot

How to Sew a Zipper with Wonder Tape Tutorial

    1. Fold the fabric edges that will form the zipper over 1/2″ and press.
    2. Apply Wondertape on the right side of the fabric on both folded edges.
    3. Pin the top of the zipper so that it stays together and does not move while sewing.

    1. Place the zipper face down on the folded edges so that the folded fabric edges are touching.  Line up the top of the zipper at the end of the fabric.

  1. Flip fabric over to be sure that the zipper seam is lined up correctly and press firmly
  2. Attach your zipper foot to your sewing machine.
  3. Unzip your zipper a few inches and start sewing down the middle of the zipper with the zipper foot centered where the fabric is joined together.  When you get to the zipper pull, backstitch and cut the thread.
  4. Pull the zipper tab up to the top of the zipper and continue sewing down the length of the zipper.   Tip*** Be sure that your needle is about 1/4″ from the center of the foot so that you leave enough room to zip up the zipper without the fabric getting caught in it.
  5.   Pivot 1/2″ before the end of the fabric and sew across the bottom. Pivot again and sew up the other side of the zipper.  When you get to the zipper pull, backstitch and cut the thread.  Pull the zipper pull down a few inches so that your machine can sew over it easily.  Continue sewing up the length of the zipper.
  6. Pivot at the top of the zipper and sew across 1/2″ from the top fabric edge.  Backstitch to secure.
  7. Trim the zipper ends.
  8. Finish your pillow or another sewing project as directed in the instructions.

For today’s post, I am sharing a 4th of July skirt pattern and tutorial.  If there is anything that screams 4th of July it definitely has to be gingham.  I’m pretty sure that they are synonymous with each other.   And I, of course, had to include pom-poms.  Because, well…they are pom-poms!  Duh.  I paired it with the red, white, and cool t-shirt I made, click over for the free cut file, for a fun 4th of July outfit.  You can also check out this huge list of 50+ 4th of July sewing projects as well as this list of patriot inspired patterns.

I found the gingham in both red and blue and Joann Fabric and Crafts in the apparel department.  It is actually shirting fabric instead of quilting cotton so it has a nice drape to it and will wrinkle less.

I also grabbed the pom-pom trim from their as well although my favorite place to get it is from is because they have so many colors and sizes.
It was crazy windy the day we headed down to the boardwalk for these photos and it was driving me crazy while I was trying to take pictures because the skirt kept getting blown all over the place, but I managed to get a couple where it wasn’t doing weird things.

Can you believe the 4th of July is less than one month away!  Yeah me neither.  I always like to whip of some t-shirts for the fourth of July so today I am sharing a Free 4th of July SVG file with you.  My kids were super excited to discover rocket popsicles for the first time so I definitely had popsicles on the brain when I was creating these! Popsicles have to be one of the best things about summer so making a free 4th of July svg about popsicles was totally fun!
I used Cricut iron-on foil for the red, silver, and blue.  And used iron-on glitter rainbow for the stick.  The white was made with some leftover sportflex that I had which is hands down my favorite type of iron on.  It really sticks and stretches with the shirt.  You can find the puff sleeve white t-shirt on Amazon. When you cut out the free 4th of July SVG you are able to position the words any way that you would like.  I positioned them at a bit of an angle for a little bit of fun. We headed on down to the lighthouse near the pier where I live to take some pictures and it was crazy windy, as you can probably tell from her crazy hair!  It was a beautiful time of day and the tide was high coming right up to the rocks on the shallow strip of beach that is in this part of the island.  I wanted to make a complete fourth of July outfit so I made the red, white, and cool t-shirt to match the really fun pom-pom and red and blue gingham skirt she is wearing, here is the free 4th of July skirt pattern.  She will be totally decked out on the 4th of July.  The girls love to ride their bikes in the parade and this outfit is perfect.

I will have the tutorial for the 4th of July skirt up next week, but in the meantime, you can make a shirt!  If you are looking for more 4th of July sewing inspiration check out this list of Patriotic Inspired Sewing Patterns.
