I am totally gushing over these because as you can see they are ridiculously cute!!! And because I think that every little girl should wear one, I put together a FREE Pattern and tutorial for you! The pattern includes a Knot Bow Headband Pattern for girls sizes Newborn – 2T. There are 4 different sizes you can make and come with easy to download instructions. Yay. And better yet, it is a super simple and fast DIY. Like 15 minutes. Seriously. My favorite kind of project!
Baby Headband Sewing Pattern
The headband sewing pattern has been updated to also include sizes: small child, child, and teen/adult. So now you can use the pattern to make a headband in any size.
**** The pattern now also includes fabric requirements, recommendations, and helpful sewing notions. There is also a video tutorial to guide you on how to se it.

Here are some of the pretty little headbands I made for Christmas gifts using the Headband Pattern. Adorbs!
The fabric I used above is organic knit from Spoonflower. I absolutely love Spoonflower, the trendiness, and a variety of designs crazy. I mean, they are so spot-on, on what is new and cool. If you don’t know about Spoonflower yet, it is a print on demand company where you can make your own designs or use other designers.
There are lots of fabric types to choose from, and they even print wrapping paper! Watch out Christmas! A few details about the type of knit fabric. It is Organic Cotton Interlock, and comes printed 56″. It is a little stiff when you first get it from the printing, but once washed softens right up.
Knot Bow Headband Pattern Supplies Needed
- Jersey Knit Fabric with at least 50% stretch
- Clear Plastic Ruler
- Rotary Cutter
- Self Healing Mat
- Walking Foot (* Optional but very helpful)
- Pins or Clips
- Stretch Thread
- Jersey Ball Point Needle
- Knot Bow Headband Pattern (Located in the Resource Library)
Download the Pattern
Assemble the Pattern
If you haven’t sewn with knits before I recommend using a walking foot and some stretch thread in the bottom. Add a stretch stitch and easy as pie! You can check out the tribal knot headband and the strawberry knot headband I made last year to go with Ava’s outfits.
Baby Headband Pattern Instructions
- – Fold fabric in half Right Sides Together (RST) and place Knot Bow Headband Pattern piece on it with the short end on the fold.
- – Place Knot Bow Headband Pattern Pieces RST.
- – Pin in place.
- – Sew around raw edges of the Knot Bow Headband using a 1/4″ seam leaving a 1″ opening.
- – Trim ends to reduce bulk and turn right side out. Step 6 -Slipstitch 1″ opening closed.

Hi there. I’m new to this so I apologize if it’s obvious but for the narrow headband the 0-3 and the 2T seem to be the same size when I printed and cut it out. And the 6-12 and 18 month are same size and bigger than 2T? Did it print out wrong? Thank you!
I can’t see to get the complete pattern to print. I tried a 12 x 12 sheet of paper and the 1 ” square is perfect size but the bottom of the headband is cut off. Any tips?
Did you print the graphic picture or the pdf that pops up when you click download pattern?
I clicked on the link and then tried to print from the PDF that opened up. I used the printer icon to print.

I’m having the same problem printing the pattern- When printed at actual size from the PDF document it cuts off. If I print it to fit page the one inch square is off.

Thanks so much for this pattern! It’s perfect to teach a beginner. But, you say to stitch with wrong sides together and that just doesn’t make sense to me. No one else has mentioned it so I wonder if I’m not understanding something.
I did not understand WST either. Some clarification would be helpful.
You stitch the wro ng sides together so the seam is on the inside. You then flip it out the right way.

Try it again. It should take you right to the page. If my computer loads slow or stops loading sometimes it doesn’t go through.

I would measure your head, divide it in half and then add the knot bow piece of the pattern (the last 5 inches or so).

One small note, and I know it’s shown properly in the sizing legend, but the sizing for the narrow 0-3 vs 6-12 (first pattern at top of page) is a touch confusing! The 6-12 months in writing at the very top seems as though it’s referring to the dotted line (top) vs, the dashed line (bottom). Just thought I’d mention it in case any one else was confused!

Hi – Thanks for the pattern. I don’t seem to see sizes on the last three pages of the pattern or a key for these. I need for a 3T. Is that the smallest on the last 3 pages. Made one for a 3 month old and it was SO cute!

The pdf in the resource library does not have the adult sizes, I thought it says above it now includes the bigger sizes.
They are included in the headband pattern download under free patterns.
