How to Sew a DUVET COVER
What you'll need:
~For a TWIN (72x90 in.) duvet you'll need 10 Yards of fabric. 5 yards for the front and 5 for the back. You'll have to trim 8 inches off of each side. You'll see what i mean.....
~For a FULL or QUEEN (88x90 in.) you'll need 10 Yards of fabric. 5 yards for the front and 5 for the back.
~For a KING (110x90 in.) you'll need 15 yards 7.5 yards for the front and 7.5 for the back. You'll need to trim 19 inches off of each side.
For ALL sizes you'll need:
~4 pieces of ribbon about 16 inches long (I like a thin grosgrain).
~3-4 Buttons 1 inch round buttons work the best.
Depending on your bedding size, cut your fabric. Each strip will be 2.5 yards long. I chose NEON fabric by Riley Blake Designs.
Now pin your 2.5 yard fabric strips together (right sides facing).
~You can serge or sew your fabric strips together.
~Press seam down.
~Top stitch center seam TOP & BOTTOM.
Now you should have your front and back pieces ready to sew together! Find a nice big area and lay them right sides facing.
PIN around the edges of your entire duvet except for the bottom opening.
Next....Serge or sew duvet together. ONLY sew 3 sides leaving the bottom open.
I like to reinforce the edges by adding a straight stitch just on the inside of the serge line. Now is a good time to sew in your ribbons.
Just sew in 2 for now, one at each top corner. Fold the ribbon in half and sew it in the corners. Reinforce your stitches.
You don't want these to come off.
~ Now You'll HEM the opening. Just a small roll hem is fine. I serged the edge of the opening then made a hem on my sewing machine.
~ NEXT... while the duvet is still inside out sew about a foot on each side of the opening together so there is a smaller opening for the duvet to fit through.
LAST PART!!!!! Add some buttons! I used Riley Blake 1 inch "Stitched" buttons. Follow your sewing machines manual for button holes.
Make sure you make the button-hole on the right side (pretty side) of the fabric. You can do 3-4 buttons. It's up to you.
Now just sew on your buttons to match where you put the button holes!
